Time coded transcript example

A time coded transcript example shows the same passage of a recording with a timecode at the start of each sentence or paragraph, written as [HH:MM:SS] for documents or HH:MM:SS:FF for video editing.

Below is one 64-second interview written four ways. The text is the same; only the timecodes change.

[HH:MM:SS], a timecode every sentence

The format for interviews, research, legal and medical transcripts. Square brackets keep the timecode apart from the words.

[00:00:00] The lighthouse at Cape Wrath was built in 1828.
[00:00:04] Its light stands 120 meters above the sea, and ships could see it from far away.
[00:00:15] Didn't the keepers get lonely?
[00:00:28] Winter storms cut them off for weeks at a time.
[00:00:37] In January 1862, a supply boat finally reached them.
[00:01:01] "We had run out of candles," one keeper wrote.

SMPTE frames, every 30 seconds

For video editors. The timecode counts frames (here 29.97 fps drop-frame) and starts at 01:00:00;00, the usual first frame of an edit sequence.

01:00:00;11 The lighthouse at Cape Wrath was built in 1828. Its light stands 120 meters above the sea, and ships could see it from far away. Didn't the keepers get lonely? Winter storms cut them off for weeks at a time.

01:00:37;04 In January 1862, a supply boat finally reached them.

01:01:01;15 "We had run out of candles," one keeper wrote.

SRT subtitles

Each cue has a number, a start and end time with milliseconds, and at most two short lines.

Make one from your own recording

Drop a file on the time coded transcript generator. The first 10 minutes of up to 3 files a day are free and come back with a timecode on every sentence, in the [HH:MM:SS] format above. Switch formats, frame rates and intervals after it is done; the transcript is relabelled, not transcribed again.

Questions

Where do the timecodes go in a transcript?

At the start of the passage they belong to, before the text, so the timecode points at where that passage begins in the recording.

How often should a transcript have a timecode?

For editing, every sentence. For reading, every 30 or 60 seconds, or at each new paragraph or speaker.
