SRT generator

An SRT generator turns the speech in an audio or video file into an SRT subtitle file: numbered cues, each with a start and end time written as HH:MM:SS,mmm and one or two short lines of text.

The first 10 minutes of up to 3 files a day free, no sign-up Then 10 hours for $9.99, paid once Audio is transcribed, not kept Unused minutes refunded within 14 days

What an SRT file looks like

An SRT file is plain text. Each cue has a number, a start and end time, and the text, followed by a blank line:

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,640
Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers
brought forth on this continent,

2
00:00:04,640 --> 00:00:10,120
a new nation, conceived in liberty, and
dedicated to the proposition that all men

The times use hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds, with a comma before the milliseconds. The arrow between them is two hyphens and a greater-than sign.

The same cues as WebVTT

WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.640

Subtitles that are easy to read

The generator keeps every cue to two lines of at most 42 characters and to at most 7 seconds, the limits most subtitle guidelines use. When a sentence is too long for one cue it is split after a comma, so a phrase stays together.

Importing the SRT

  • YouTube: Studio, Subtitles, Add language, Upload file, With timing.
  • Premiere Pro: File, Import, then drag the captions onto the sequence.
  • DaVinci Resolve: File, Import, Subtitle, then drag it to the timeline.
  • Final Cut Pro: File, Import, Captions.

If your sequence starts at 01:00:00:00, set the start timecode before you download so the subtitles line up.

Questions

Is the SRT generator free?

The first 10 minutes of up to 3 files a day are free and download as SRT, with no sign-up. Longer files use minutes from a pack, paid once.

How long is each subtitle?

At most two lines of 42 characters and 7 seconds on screen. Long sentences are split at a comma where there is one, and cues never overlap.

Can the SRT start at 01:00:00:00 to match my timeline?

Yes. Set a start timecode and every cue is shifted by it, which helps when a sequence or a camera file does not start at zero.

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

Both list timed cues. SRT numbers each cue and uses a comma before the milliseconds (00:00:04,640); WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT line and uses a full stop (00:00:04.640). Web video players expect VTT; editing software and YouTube accept both.

Can I fix a word before downloading?

Yes. Click any line in the transcript, correct it, and the SRT you download includes the change.
